So, as far as game development goes, I still like QA work better than developing. Software testing is fun when I can simply focus on bugs and tracking them. Its like a skill based puzzle for me because some bugs are obvious but others you need to have a good understanding of the software to find. This is especial the case with edge case bugs. (ooh that gives me an idea for a bug hunting hidden object game. )

Today while troubleshooting a function in my code and testing the fixes, I found a funny bug. The test puzzle had Banana on the word list and no matter how many times I tried to select it, the puzzle didn't recognize the word. I was confused because that part of the code hadn't been worked on and was running fine just one change before.... Then I saw it.

That line had the letters BANANAB in a row. I had a one in a million chance to catch a palindrome combination of letters like this. But once I did run into the bug, I learned that my code doesn't properly handle having more than one correct direction like this. There were two correct ways to highlight the word banana but only one was considered correct by the logic.

This is why testing matters and why your test data is important. How you set up your tests and your test data can make all of the difference between smoking out bugs and shipping them so that the end users are left to find them. This is also why my test puzzles are set up to test specific scenarios not just that the puzzle allows word searching

However, I threw this one onto the bug list to be fixed at a later time... Unfortunately, I don't consider it a critical bug at this time because I have much higher priority fixes to make. ๐Ÿ˜… But it was amusing.

As always, I am on the hunt for a new job opportunity, preferably as a software tester or an entry level Narrative Designer.
